The client has asked you to propose an appropriate re-use for the ruin chosen, and to show how you would approach the restoration and insertion of new work into the building. Re-use examples might be: dwelling, holiday lets (Astley Castle and the Landmark Trust), or commercial offices. This will require a significant level of intervention: roof, flooring, windows, doors, staircases, insulation and services.
Task
Required briefing document and graphic material:
1) the historical architectural nature of the site – who, what, why, when, where. Also include any references / websites to key texts about the site (300 words).
Additionally include here:
- a map to locate the site regionally (not a Google map with red balloon please!).
- and a photographic / graphic record to illustrate the range of buildings at the site – please do not use poor-resolution images of the site.
- a general current site plan showing individual building(s), road access etc.
2) the protected nature of the site and the implications for any changes to the existing fabric of the historic buildings. Also include references to wider conservation legislation where appropriate (e.g. an English Heritage SAM entry about the monument) (300 words).
Also include:
- Scheduled Ancient Monument record map showing the red constraint line denoting the extent of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
3) an overview giving an indicative outline proposal for the re-use – what, where, how (400 words).
4) graphic material showing your indicative outline proposal for the re-use (through CAD drawings and other graphic media – Sketchup etc). This material should be sufficiently detailed to give a clear sense of how the building will be re-used, but should not go to the extent of working details which would allow the actual work to proceed! The aim of this material is to allow for a detailed discussion to begin about a) whether the re-use is viable; and b) the likely impact on existing fabric.
Therefore include:
- precise location (proposed site plan and layout)
- site access
- car parking
- building footprint
- building height
- internal interventions (floors, roofing, new work, services)
- indicative proposal for external appearance (materials)
- impact on the historic fabric (interfaces, junctions, overlaps of old and new)
- landscaping where appropriate
